Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman is a one-woman show based on the life of the amazing woman who led more than 300 slaves to freedom. She was part of the famous Underground Railroad that served as the system for slaves to escape to the North. During her life, she was both famous and infamous, depending on which side of the slavery line one stood. She worked primarily independently, until the Civil War when she worked for the U.S. Government as a nurse and spy. However, while she was greatly respected by many of the country’s influential leaders and spokesmen, she was never paid. Harriet lived a life of poverty and goodwill, depending on the many people along the Railroad who provided food and shelter along the way. She never attended school or learned to read or write. But she spoke for an oppressed group of people publicly at antislavery rallies. It is said that her speech was a combination of poetry, passages from the Bible and common language that she wove together effortlessly. This play has been created to tell the story of her actions and the events in her personal life that shaped her incredible path as a freedom fighter, humanitarian, leader and friend.
